COLORGY School learning system
BACKGROUND
In the beginning, Colorgy is an app designed for college students importing their school timetable to their mobile. Colorgy let them check their schedule and classroom any time anywhere. However, this pain point seems not enough. Because students will remember their classroom after a few weeks. And our retention will become lower and lower. So we need some new strategy to develop our product.
RESPONSIBILITY
As a sole designer, I worked with product manager on user research, interview users and create wireframes, high-fi mockups, the graphic user interface by myself.
PROCESS
EXPLORE
In order to know which old feature our user cares less and which new feature they might want and may have a chance to raise our retention, we conducted two different questionnaire surveys. The result shows that:
1. The most requested feature “sync school learning system” (include teacher’s announcement, homework, reading material……)
2. Their second choice is a widget (but may against our business goal)
3. In old features, they wanted to “import class” the most (they can import their class by entering their school number and password)
CHALLENGE
After our research, we decide to choose "sync school learning system" as our first step.
My design challenge: our user use our app as a class timetable app for now. I need to find a creative solution to combine user’s school system and won’t disturb them or make them feel confused.
DIRECTION
I try to think about our user, and how they might use this new feature. They already have a school system website. They get used to it. I try to do some research on existing school system’s information architecture and end up with two different directions.
Solution_A
Combine school learning system to school timetable
pro:
1. User don’t need to learn a new UI
2. User can check their learning system according to their weekly schedule.
3. User can check which class has update new in one-page
con:
1. User won’t notice this new feature.
2. you don’t know which class has the newest update.
Solution_B
add learning system as an independent new feature.
pro:
1. User will notice this new feature.
2. the class news will organize by their update time.
con:
1. user can’t check all class on one page
2.user need to learn new UI.
3. if a user needs to check both their school timetable and school learning system they need to switch from this two tabs and it’ll take more step to finished it.
STUDENT REVIEWS
we talk to some college students and they give us some very good insight.
We took some of our user’s opinion but we still need to consider our business goal: in-app advertising. Therefore we thought solution A will let user see more pages and stay in our app longer.
RESULT
The school learning system becomes a major feature in our app 25% of our user keep coming back for their handout homework and many other useful things.
And our user daily retention Increased from 13.2% to 41.2 %. It’s really a huge success for us.
